Power generation hits 5,000MW as TCN restores collapsed national grid

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national grid has been restored following its collapse that led to widespread power outage across states.

Daily trust reports that the power generation rose to 5,090 megawatts (MW) following the restoration of the collapsed grid.

The managing director of TCN, Usman Gur Mohammed, said the company has procured 250MW spinning reserve to cushion future system disturbance and "has written to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to quickly approve the implementation."

He said: “The reason for the grid collapse was that there was a multiple tripping around Onitsha substation. We are also suspecting that one of the generators went out. We have sent our team of engineers to go and investigate.”

TCN said it has improved the power system stability and that its $1.6 billion donor funded projects nationwide would ensure more efficiency.

It also called for investment in the distribution network in order to achieve stable grid particularly during the rainy season when Distribution Companies drop huge loads because of rain and storm saying it could trigger grid frequency disturbance.

Engr. Mamman Lawal who is the head of Independent System Operation at TCN said: “So far, we don’t spin reserve to grapple with this, so we often use the manual control method when the frequency becomes high.”

Engr. Victor Adewumi who is the head of Transmission Service Provider at TCN said "the grid recorded high voltage last Wednesday that shattered some lightning arresters at TCN substations in Jebba, Shiroro and Jos before the grid collapsed. We had to quickly restore those equipment first before restoring the grid."

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that there was electricity outage across some states in the country following the collapse of the national electricity grid.

The collapse is coming a day “after the national grid rose to 5,114 megawatts”. The collapse has affected 11 distribution companies.

Oyebode Fadipe who is the spokesman of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said the collapse reduced its allocation to 20 MW.
