Tories in freefall as new poll shows party FIFTH behind Brexit Party, Lib Dems and Greens

0

THE Tories’ poll disaster deepened today as the party slumped to fifth place with just one in ten voters backing it.

Theresa May is under mounting pressure to quit No10 as the Conservatives continue to slide in the polls.

Theresa May is on course for a poor performance

A fresh survey today showed the Tories are on course to win 10 per cent of votes in next Thursday’s Euro elections.

The Brexit Party is likely to win in a landslide, according to the YouGov poll for The Times.

Nigel Farage’s party is on 34 per cent with Labour trailing far behind on just 16 per cent.

The pro-EU Lib Dems and Greens are also ahead of the Tories on 15 and 11 per cent.

A separate London-specific survey shows the Conservatives also on fifth place within the capital, with Labour holding a modest lead over the Brexit Party.

If the results are mirrored in next week’s election, it will be the worst showing for the Tories in any national election ever.

Senior party figures today slammed the PM’s leadership and admitted they are on course for a humiliating defeat.

‘WHY HAVEN’T WE LEFT?’

Jacob Rees-Mogg told LBC: “The opinion polls are far from promising. You have to ask yourself – why should Conservatives go out?

“Many Conservative people who’ve been members for decades feel this is an opportunity to say ‘why haven’t we left’ and ‘we’re not entirely convinced by the current leadership’.”

He added: “I would appeal to their loyalty, to their tradition and to say that the Conservative Party will get a new leader at some point.

“We want that new leader to have a base on which he or she can build and if we find that we are getting under 15% of the vote, if we are coming fifth behind the Greens, then it will be harder for that figure to rebuild.”

Brexiteer Nigel Evans said: “We’re going to get an absolute hammering.”

And backbench MP Huw Merriman, an aide to Philip Hammond added: “We’re at the perfect storm so yes, I think we’ll get an absolute mauling.”

Tory grandees want Mrs May to name the date she plans to step down and trigger the contest to replace her.

Today Arlene Foster, head of the PM’s DUP allies, launched an extraordinary direct attack on her.

She said: “We have a Prime Minister frankly who doesn’t have the vision for the United Kingdom post-Brexit that we all want to see.”
