Ander Herrera sends heartfelt message to Man United fans after confirming summer exit
Ander Herrera penned a heartfelt open letter to Manchester United supporters after the club confirmed the Spanish midfielder will leave this summer.
The Red Devils star is set to leave the 20-time English champions when his current deal expires in the coming weeks following a difficult season for both club and player.
Herrera failed to negotiate a new contract with Manchester United amid reported interest from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the versatile midfielder.
The 29-year-old has proven a big hit with Manchester United supporters over the past five seasons following his £29m move from Athletic Bilbao in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Herrera’s never-say-die attitude won him a lot of admirers and the Spain international played his part in their Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup triumphs.
Current Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to overhaul his Red Devils squad this summer after they failed to finish in the top four for the fourth time in six seasons.
Herrera issued a statement on social media after Manchester United confirmed his summer exit ahead of their final game of the season against Cardiff City.
“There is red in my heart, I knew it from the first time I played here and in the moment that I started to wear it,” Herrera said.
“A club with thousands of fans that respect and remember all the players who give everything.
“I felt special when I heard my name chanted. I felt proud when the fans decided I was part of this incredible history.
“Every time I represented this club, in every game, in wins and losses, even when I couldn’t help from the grass, I understood what this club means.
“I am going to remember each of the almost 200 matches that I have played with this jersey. Because playing for the greatest club in England has been a true honour. Thanks for these five amazing years.”
Herrera netted 20 goals in 189 games in all competitions over the past five seasons at Manchester United.
The Spanish midfielder failed to win a top trophy such as the Premier League or the Champions League at Old Trafford.
