Conor McGregor has phone smash charges sensationally dropped after Brit victim refuses to testify in Miami
PROSECUTORS have dropped charges against Conor McGregor today after he was accused of smashing and stealing a fan’s phone outside a Miami Beach hotel.
The State Attorney’s Office announced the decision because the Brit victim, who has already settled a civil lawsuit with McGregor, stopped cooperating with investigators.
Prosecutor Khalil Madani announced in court that the victim had now recanted his story.
“The victim of the crime does not wish to return to the United States and prosecute this case,” Madani said.
The MMA ace did not appear in court for the brief hearing.
The Notorious one was arrested and charged with strong-arm robbery and criminal mischief over the incident involving 22-year-old Ahmed Abdirzak’s phone in March.
CCTV footage released by the Miami state attorney’s office seemed to show how the whole thing unfolded after Abdirzak tried to film the MMA star outside the Fontainebleau Hotel.
It appeared to show McGregor then picking up the phone after trying to destroy it and walking off with it.
The 30-year-old was set to face US courts on reduced charges of felony robbery and misdemeanour criminal mischief and could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
However, the Irishman will no longer have to deal with Abdirzak’s civil claim after the suit was withdrawn.
The restaurant manager had earlier been believed to be demanding around £11k for battery, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress over the March 11 incident.
The fighter’s lawyer Sam Rabin recently revealed he is very confident that McGregor will “successfully defend this case” and will not face any jail time.
