There's no doubt Varys is the 'Game of Thrones' MVP from Episode 5
WARNING: THERE ARE LOTS OF GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS AHEAD. IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE FIFTH EPISODE OF THE EIGHTH AND FINAL SEASON, STOP HER.
Ready?
Each week here at For The Win, we choose one MVP per episode. And after Daenerys decided to ignore the bells of King’s Landing indicating Cersei and her army was surrendering and torched the city and its innocent inhabitants, we have to hand the award to poor Varys, who was torched by Dany at the beginning of the ep for spreading the word that Jon Snow was the rightful heir to the throne as Aegon Targaryen.
He absolutely deserves MVP for realizing what was going on with Dany, that her turn into “The Mad Queen” was happening right under our noses. In Episode 4, he said he sided “with the people” and would do whatever he could do to make sure the right leader was on the throne. He paid for his correct take with his life.
Also this blew my mind — I didn’t pick up on it at first:
He knew!! And now don’t you wish Dany had listened to “the Spider” and not torched a city? Because now she’ll have to rule by fear, exactly the way Cersei did during her reign, and that’s not what the “Breaker of Chains” wanted (although as many fans pointed out Sunday night, she hanged masters in Meereen).
What I want to know is what Varys would have done if he was alive to see Dany destroy King’s Landing. My guess is what he was already doing — hitching his wagon to Jon Snow and convincing him to take the throne from his aunt, perhaps by force.
RIP, Master of Whispers.
