TCN workers counter TUC members from picketing Abuja office

There was a clash between workers of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and members of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday, May 13.

The TCN tried to stop protesting members of the TUC from picketing their office in Abuja.

Channels TV reports that the development occurred when TUC accused the company of poor handling of workers’ welfare and intimidation of the union members.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Nigeria Labour Congress commenced a nationwide protest over the leadership tussle at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) board.

The nationwide protest, which began 9 am on Monday, May 13 started from the Labour house in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. It had members of affiliated unions in attendance.

The union is protesting over the minister of labour, Chris Ngige's unwillingness to inaugurate the NSITF board.

Recall that Legit.ng reported that the Transmission Company of Nigeria said the collapse of the national grid on Friday, May 8, was caused by a multiple tripping on its substation in Onitsha, Anambra.

The managing director of TCN, Mohammed Usman, made the disclosure at a news conference in Abuja. The national electricity grid had experienced some disturbances resulting in reduction of electricity allocation to electricity distribution companies in the country.

The Yola electricity distribution company said it was allocated 0MW during the period while the Abuja electricity company said it received 20MW.

Both electricity companies supply power to a minimum of three states each. Mohammed said that the collapse may also have been triggered because one of the generators went off.
