Residents flee Birnin Gwari as gunmen attack Katsina village

Residents of several villages in Sabon Birnin local government area of Sokoto state have been pictured fleeing for safety as armed bandits attacked their villages.

TVC News reports that several of the villagers have moved to Gatawa for safety while several others fled to villages in Niger Republic.

Quoting a source, the news outlet claimed that military personnel were deployed to the area and many of the bandits were killed and several others injured as there were exchanges of fire between the bandits and the military.

Also, in related development, gunmen were reported to have attacked Wagini village of Batsari local government area of Katsina state, killing one person and injuring three others.

According to Daily Trust, the gunmen stormed the village in the middle of the night, shooting sporadically. They also set ablaze cars and houses belonging to the locals.

Legit.ng had reported that there are indications that the high rate of banditry and kidnappings in the northwest of Nigeria may affect food production in the area by over 50 per cent.

Officials of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) who expressed the view in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), added that the criminal activities are wiping out family incomes.
