Your iPhone might miss out on Apple’s iOS 13 update – find out if you’re at risk
SOME iPhone owners might miss out on the next big software update: iOS 13.
Apple’s new update is expected to add long-awaited features – including ‘Dark Mode’ for nighttime use – but not everyone will be able to get it.
For a start, anyone with an iPhone older than the iPhone 5S will be out of luck.
That’s because the current iOS 12 isn’t supported on devices before that phone.
However, a new report suggests that the iPhone 5S, iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will also miss out.
French tech site iPhoneSoft claims to have insider knowledge of Apple’s plans, courtesy of a tip-off from a developer.
The good news is that this would mean Apple would offer its new iOS 13 software to everyone new handset from iPhone 6S and later.
Software updates are extremely important for phone owners.
For a start, they mean the addition of brand new features, as well as bug fixes that improve the performance of your handset.
But they also mean security patches that prevent hackers from cracking your phone’s security using old exploits.
It’s worth noting that Apple’s software update offering is pretty exceptional.
By contrast, most Android smartphones receive one or two years’ of updates.
Very rarely, a phone might receive three years’ of updates – but it’s not common.
By contrast, Apple offered out the latest iOS 12 software update to smartphones going back years – including 2013’s iPhone 5S.
That means an iPhone that came out nearly six years ago is still receiving software updates from Apple.
It’s also possible that this leak could be wrong, and Apple does plan to support the iPhone 5S.
We won’t know the truth until Apple’s WWDC convention in early June, or possibly the September iPhone launch.
That’s when we’ll find out more details about the iOS 13 software, and all the new features we can expect to see from the update.
