These 5 'Game of Thrones' characters need to step up for the series finale

0

Spoiler alert: This recap of “The Bells” episode contains information from season eight of Game of Thrones.

Daenerys Targaryen burned down King’s Landing while some of the Westeros’ most moral characters watched. Many of them had been fighting on the side of The Dragon Queen — or now, The Mad Queen. And they were left powerless while Dany fried the capital.

The show set up Dany’s digression into madness, with her increased isolation and loss of friends and allies. It escalated with the deaths of her most trusted confidants in Jorah Mormont and Missandei. It culminated when Jon Snow indicated he no longer had romantic feelings for Dany (which is understandable because she is his aunt).

Just like they set up her madness, the show-runners seem to be setting up her death. Jon was committed to her as his queen. But at the end of the episode, he was basically saying, “Not my queen.” (More on that.) And with Arya, an unstoppable assassin, seeming fairly unhappy in the penultimate episode. Dany may move to the top of Arya’s kill list. If nothing else, Arya is list-oriented.

But The Battle (or The Slaughter) of King’s Landing made it clear: someone needs to step up and stop Dany.

5. Bronn

For selfish reasons — which seem to be the only ones motivating Bronn at this point in the show — he should help kill Dany. If Dany kills Tyrion, which is starting to feel likely, there will be no one with to honor Bronn’s agreement with Jamie and Tyrion. They’d both be dead. So Bronn should intervene to help Tyrion. Bronn likely won’t, largely because he has wisely decided to wait out the fighting. But it was no doubt disappointing when the sell-sword made that shrewd decision, even if Bronn graduated to being a politician in the process.

4. Tyrion

Now that Jamie and Cersei are dead, he can stop making terrible decisions … right? Westeros’ famous tactician needs to take after his brother Jamie, the king-slayer, and become a queen-slayer.

3. Arya

She’s an angry and unstoppable murdering machine. If she wanted to kill Dany, she could probably do it. It would be more challenging than her coup of Walder Frey. But clearly, Arya is a boss (see: The Night King). Arya can end Dany’s reign or at least help Jon.

2. Jon Snow

Last we saw, Jon was having his not-my-queen moment. He was calling off his soldiers and running away from the city. His reasoning was probably twofold: 1) it wasn’t safe in the city because of the fire, and 2) he wanted no part in the slaughter. So how far will he run?

If he retreats to Dragonstone, he can try to reason with The Mad Queen, who might burn him alive for insubordination. If Jon retreats to Winterfell, he might draw Drogon and Dany back to The North, where Winterfell might suffer the same fate as King’s Landing.

This whole season has been a wrong place, wrong time for Jon. In The Battle of Winterfell, he’s on the dragon, which renders him pretty useless. In the Battle of King’s Landing, he’s on foot, which again renders him pretty useless. He’s in The North when he should be in The South — and vice versa.

We get it: Jon doesn’t want the Iron Throne. But it’s time for him to understand that this is no longer about what he wants. Dany is unfit to rule.

1. Bran

WHERE YOU AT, DUDE?

If the Three-Eye Raven is pulling the strings, he’s been an entirely invisible puppet master. In theory, Bran may be choosing not to intervene because it will all lead to Jon taking the throne. But, come on, was there no other way?

Essentially, Bran’s storyline has been like watching Frodo, Sam and Gollum in “Lord of the Rings,” only to realize that they don’t matter — that one of the Hobbits can’t destroy the ring.

Bran got a lot of airtime in this show. Can he finally make an impact? If he has been quietly making an impact behind the scenes, can the show-runners explain how?
