May Stunner: Beilein Leaves Michigan For NBA
Best of luck to him but it doesn’t seem too smart to us.
Bet you didn't see this coming: John Beilein is leaving Michigan to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He got a five-year deal to take the plunge.
Color us skeptical.
We have immense respect for Beilein and his offensive talents are stunning. We love watching his teams execute.
However that may not work in the NBA and he’s always been in charge. We’re not sure that’s going to work either.
There’s also a pretty good chance he’ll end up coaching either Zion Williamson or RJ Barrett since Cleveland will likely have a high pick - so it could be important to either guy.
Needless to say that also opens up the Michigan job and just as the carousel had pretty much stopped.
We’d expect assistant Luke Yaklich to be on the list.
For all his brilliance, Beilien has never been a great defensive coach. Yaklich really addressed that weakness and over the last few years has made Michigan a defensive powerhouse.
Otherwise we’ll have to wait and see but the only Duke guy we could imagine being on that list would be Mike Brey and while that’s just us speculating, his style is somewhat similar.
