Conor McGregor charges dropped over cell phone smashing incident

0

Conor McGregor has resolved his legal matters in Miami.

Per the Associated Press, prosecutors have dropped all charges against McGregor in regards to a March 11 incident outside of a Miami hotel in which the former two-division UFC champion allegedly slapped the phone out of a man’s hand, stomped on it, and stole it. The alleged victim, Ahmed Abdirzak, is no longer cooperating with authorities and has recanted his story.

Abdirzak and McGregor had previously reached an out-of-court settlement in their civil lawsuit, according to the Miami Herald. McGregor was originally charged with strong-armed robbery and criminal mischief following an arrest in Miami Beach on the evening of March 11, but those charges were dropped during a hearing on Monday in which neither McGregor nor Abdirzak, who resides in England, were present.

“The victim of the crime does not wish to return to the United States and prosecute this case,” Prosecutor Khalil Madani said.

McGregor’s attorney Samuel Rabin agreed, saying, “I think this was the appropriate resolution of this case.” The fighter initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A former UFC champion at featherweight and lightweight, McGregor most recently competed at UFC 229 last October, when he was defeated by current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
