McLaren star Lando Norris blames Lance Stroll for collision in Spanish F1 Grand Prix

LANDO NORRIS has claimed that Lance Stroll failed to give him enough room as the pair collided in the Spanish F1 Grand Prix.

The British star was looking to push his way through the field late on, but clipped the Racing Point car on lap 47 – trying overtake on the inside for 14th place.

The accident led to a safety car, which ultimately helped Norris’s McLaren teammate Carlos Sainz Jr, who finished eighth to extend his record of scoring points at every single home race for the Spaniard.

Yet, the 18-year-old was not left pleased, after suffering a second retirement since stepping to Formula One during the off-season.

And it will serve as a big lesson for the young Brit, as his impatience got the better of him.

As reported by GPToday.net, Norris said: “I didn’t want to just sit there and do nothing.

“I tried to get past Stroll. I was on the inside and I don’t know if he didn’t see me as he turned in but there was contact and it put me out of the race.”

Unfortunately there is not enough space for two cars and there was not much I could do.

Stewards investigated the collision afterwards, deeming it as a racing incident with neither driver being punished.

But Stroll hinted that Norris may have been in the wrong, claiming only one car could have made the corner.

The Canadian said: “Unfortunately there is not enough space for two cars and there was not much I could do.

“I felt the contact on my rear and I was sent into the gravel.”

Yet, despite avoiding any consequence from the incident, Norris was still left displeased as he looks to improve on what has been a up-and-down start to his F1 career.

The British driver said: “I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t get to finish my fifth Grand Prix but at the end of the day we weren’t in the points so it didn’t cost us as much as it could have done in another race.”

Yet, it was not all bad for the McLaren team, with the collision leading to a safety car – which helped Sainz close down those in front of him and finish eighth.

The Spaniard, who now takes his total number of points to 26 in five Spanish Grand Prix races, tweeted after, thanking his teammate for helping him reach the top ten.
