‘Killing Eve’ sweeps BAFTA TV Awards: Backstage with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Jodie Comer and Fiona Shaw

“Killing Eve” won a leading three BAFTA TV Awards: Best Drama Series, Best Actress for Jodie Comer and  Best Supporting Actress for Fiona Shaw. Backstage, the three women made merry with each other as they celebrated the show’s showing. While series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge tried to sneak out without so much as a word, the winners’ room host were not having that.

Waller-Bridge demurred any talk of her work as a writer on the new James Bond film. “I’ve made a promise to myself that I’m just going talk about ‘Killing Eve.” As for why she didn’t appear in the show, she readily admitted, “I weirdly wrote myself out of the casting bracket, which I didn’t mean to do. I was at one point going to have a cameo. Villanelle [Comer] was going to kill me in some way.” “There is still time,” chimed Comer. “The show’s not over yet!” “I would love to be murdered by Jodie Comer,” retorted Waller-Bridge.

Among those Comer edged out was her co-star Sandra Oh. After delivering an emotional acceptance speech, she continued in the same vein backstage.  “I remember laying in bedroom thinking ‘Oh my God, imagine being in that room with all those incredible people and to share that sort of celebration with them. And now here I am, doing exactly that.”

Following the success of the show, Shaw says she has seen a rise in her profile.”People always used to stop me to ask about ‘Harry Potter’ (she played Aunt Petunia) or sometimes something I did in the theatre, but it is always for ‘Killing Eve’ now. People get off their bicycles to come and talk to me. That’s how I know the show is so big – no one has ever bothered to get off their bicycle to come and talk to me before.”
