- Mikel's current deal with Middlesbrough expires in June and he will be free to join a new club

Newly promoted Premier League side Norwich City are reportedly planning to sign Nigeria international John Obi Mikel this summer.

The Canaries have been heavily linked with the 32-year-old, who will become a free agent this summer, after his short spell with Middlesbrough expires in June.

Mikel Obi joined the championship side during the winter transfer window from Chinese Super League side Tianjin TEDA and scored one goal in 18 appearances.

Another newly promoted side Sheffield United are also eyeing a move for the former Chelsea star as they hope to build an experienced side for the 2019-20 season.

Mikel's only goal for Boro came on the final day of the Championship - and it was his first league goal in England since 2013.

According to Soka 25 East, the Super Eagles captain has revealed he would be playing in England in the coming season - a statement which has strengthened his suitors' confidence.

Mikel boasts of ten year Premier League experience with Chelsea and his signing for Norwich will boost their confidence when kick off their campaign next season.

While at Stamford Bridge, the 32-year-old made 249 EPL appearances for the club, winning two league titles, three FA Cup’s, a League Cup, a Europa League and the Champions League.

He is also expected to join his national team colleagues when the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations camp opens in Abuja next month.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has insisted that he wants to play at the top level again after scoring for Middlesbrough against Rotherham in the Championship.

Mikel scored his first goal for Boro in the final day 2-1 win at Rotherham, but the season ended in disappointment as his club missed out on sixth place to Derby who beat West Brom 3-1.

He joined Boro in January after leaving the Chinese Super League, and the 32-year-old wants to continue his football in Europe.
