Spurs player is singled out for praise by Ajax’s De Jong

It has been nearly a week since the memorable scenes in Amsterdam that Tottenham Hotspur fans will talk about for decades to come.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in North London, Tottenham went into the return leg against Ajax knowing they had to score to get back into the tie.

The Dutch giants found themselves 2-0 up within 35 minutes which made Mauricio Pochettino’s side facing an almost impossible task at half time of requiring three goals in order to progress.

A spirited second half performance saw Tottenham fight back and level the tie on the night at 2-2 when Lucas Moura scored a quick-fire brace in the space of four minutes.  Pochettino’s decision to bring on Fernando Llorente to act as a target man in attack certainly paid dividends. 

Deep into injury time, it looked as if Spurs’ European dreams would be over, only for the Brazilian to strike deep into injury time to complete his hat-trick and send his side through to the final on away goals.

Moura’s performance was singled out for praise by Ajax’s highly-rated midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The 22-year-old will join Barcelona on July 1st for an initial £65m (Sky Sports).

de Jong said to Voetball Primeur: “We were no longer playing football. Everything went long. Then it becomes difficult.

“Spurs also has a lot of physical strength. In the end the game just went wrong. Three times Moura … He is a very good player, very explosive.”
