One of cycling’s most highly anticipated races returns on Saturday as the 2019 Giro d’Italia gets underway in Bologna with the first of three individual time trials featured over the next three weeks.

There’s no easing into the race, either, as the seemingly meager Stage 1 is only eight kilometers in length but features one of the seven summit finishes located throughout this year’s Giro.

The pool of talent is strong heading to Bologna for the opening segment of a 21-stage Giro. However, reigning champion Chris Froome hasn’t returned to Italy to defend his title, preferring to focus on potentially winning a fifth Tour de France later this year.

His employers Team Ineos—formerly known as Team Sky—will compete in their first Giro since changing sponsors. They’re also weakened by the absence of Egan Bernal, who was ruled out of contention after recently breaking his collarbone in training.

It’s resulted in Team Ineos assembling a very young squad, with an average age of just 25 years, but team chief Dave Brailsford has said he’s excited at the prospects, per Cycling Weekly:

“Over the last two seasons we have been bringing together a carefully selected group of young riders who we believe to be the future of our team.

“With this developmental goal in mind, we have chosen to field our youngest-ever team for a Grand Tour and it’s fitting it should be our first one as Team Ineos.”

Tom Dumoulin—runner-up in last year’s Giro—and Vincenzo Nibali are the only former Giro winners named on the start list with Froome out of the running. The former in particular looks like the best bet to capitalise in his stead and make the jump up from last year’s silver medal.

It was only in 2017 that the Team Sunweb star won his first Giro, while Nibali of Team Bahrain-Merida has two winners’ medals to his name (2013, 2016).

There’s speculation Movistar’s Mikel Landa could join Bahrain-Merida in the near future, and the Spaniard is sure to be another major player in the mountain stages in Italy this month.
