WWE: First Ever Goldberg vs. Undertaker Match Signed for Saudi Arabia

0

WWE announces a first time ever clash between two titans, as Goldberg is set to battle The Undertaker at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia next month. Despite both men playing major roles in the late 1990s/early 2000s wrestling boom period, their paths have rarely crossed. The main reason for that is proximity, as Goldberg worked for WCW from 1997 to the company's close, while Undertaker has been with WWE since 1990. Goldberg has only worked two short stints in WWE since the end of the Monday Night Wars, and a proper singles match with Undertaker never ended up being in the cards.

The closest Goldberg and Undertaker ever came to wrestling each other previously was a short interaction during 2017's Royal Rumble match, in which both men competed. However, the two share somewhat similar places in wrestling history. Both Goldberg and Undertaker are multiple time world champions, both are large bruisers known for no-selling offense from opponents, and both still carry an air of intimidation, despite being in their 50s.

One accolade Goldberg has that Undertaker doesn't is an induction into WWE's Hall of Fame, although Undertaker will surely go in whenever he finally gives WWE the go-ahead to induct him. For now, Undertaker seems happy wrestling a few matches per year, at big money events. Speaking of which, WWE confirmed on its website today that Goldberg vs. Undertaker is officially signed for the Super ShowDown pay-per-view, set to be held on June 7 from the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Also officially on the Super ShowDown card are a singles match between old rivals Triple H and Randy Orton, and a 50-man battle royal. HHH and Orton have a long, storied history, both as enemies and teammates in the Evolution stable. This will actually be their first one-on-one encounter since an episode of Raw in 2010, and their first singles match on pay-per-view since a 3 Stages of Hell battle for the WWE Championship at The Bash 2009. The battle royal is basically a lower-key version of last year's Greatest Royal Rumble match, also held in Saudi Arabia.

Other WWE talents confirmed to compete at Super ShowDown include Universal Champion Seth Rollins, WWE Champion Kofi Kingston, AJ Styles, Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, and Roman Reigns. It remains to be seen if John Cena or Daniel Bryan will take part, as both declined to appear at last November's Saudi Arabia event, Crown Jewel, due to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by the Saudi Arabian government. Nevertheless, WWE seems intent on moving forward with its Saudi business relationship, due to the massive amount of money they stand to make. For an example of the kind of cash the Saudis are throwing around, one need only look at Goldberg, who hasn't wrestled a match since battling Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XXXIII in 2017, and is presumably heading back to the ring for a huge paycheck.
