The 144th edition of the Preakness Stakes will hope to match the 2019 Kentucky Derby for excitement, though officials will hope for less controversy at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.

There will be no Triple Crown champion christened in 2019, but the absence of Kentucky winner, Country House, will motivate the rest of the field to clinch victory in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Derby ended in historic fashion two weeks ago and saw Country House crowned the winner after Maximum Security became the first horse in Kentucky history to be disqualified from first place. A 20-minute inquest ended with him moving to 17th while second was promoted to the top.

His jockey, Luis Saez, was suspended for 15 days after the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission adjudged he had moved to directly block War of Will on his way to the gold. Neither he nor Country House will participate in Maryland on Saturday.

War of Will was a hot contender at Churchill Downs and returns as one of the frontrunners for the Preakness at 3/1. However, Bob Baffert-trained Improbable is the bookmakers’ leading pick as things stand, coming in short at 2/1.

The weather for Pimlico is expected to be bright and sunny, which would be in direct contrast to the wet that created slower, muddy conditions in Kentucky.

Faster conditions could favor War of Will if he gets off to a good start at the rail, although the 13 horses expected to compete would make it the biggest field in this race since 2011. With that in mind, Improbable could face crowding issues near the middle at No. 4, and he’s now failed to win in three races after starting his career with three victories straight.

Baffert has won this race seven times—the joint-most wins of any trainer—and jockey Mike Smith has two Preakness triumphs under his belt (1993, 2018). That blend led to first at Pimlico aboard Justify en route to last season’s Triple Crown, and the pair hope to replicate that form in 2019.
