Saturday, May 18, 2019 • 4:10 p.m.

Marlins Park • Miami, FL

LHP Steven Matz (3-2, 3.86) vs. RHP Pablo López (2-5, 5.93)

SNY • WCBS 880 AM • ESPN 1050 AM

The Mets dropped their third straight game last night. In their last three losses they have lost twice to the Nationals, the fourth place team in the division, and now once to the Marlins. There were redeeming aspects to the game: Pete Alonso hit two homers, despite playing a game of catch up the Mets almost came back at the end, etc. But last night was not good.

Mets Lineup

  1. Jeff McNeil – LF
  2. Amed Rosario – SS
  3. Robinson Cano – 2B
  4. Pete Alonso – 1B
  5. Wilson Ramos – C
  6. Brandon Nimmo – RF
  7. Todd Frazier – 3B
  8. Juan Lagares – CF
  9. Steven Matz – P

Marlins Lineup

Steven Matz comes back today from the IL and hopefully to save the team. When the Mets first hit a rut in April, it was Matz who brought them out. In seven starts this year and 35.0 innings, he has a 3.86 ERA, 5.11 FIP, 1.200 WHIP and 101 ERA+. He allowed three runs over 13.0 innings before the game where he got injured, where he allowed three runs over 5.2 innings. Against the Marlins this season he has allowed three runs but only one earned over 5.1 innings. The Marlins have the following numbers against him:

Pablo Lopez is back for the Marlins. In eight starts and 41.0 innings this season he has a 5.93 ERA, 3.82 FIP, 1.293 WHIP and 65 ERA+. His last start was against the Mets last week and it was not good, allowing 10 runs off 10 hits and three homers in three innings. His ERA going into that game was 4.03, so he will be looking for revenge tonight (think Matz allowing eight runs against the Phillies and then in the next start shutting them down revenge). The Mets have the following numbers against him:

Notes

Pete Alonso has 14 homers, which is already tied for the seventh-most in franchise history by a rookie with Benny Agbayani (1999) and David Wright (2004). Johnny Lewis is sixth on the list with 15 (1965). Darryl Strawberry hold the club rookie mark with 26 homers in 1983.

Through his first 43 career games, Pete Alonso has 14 homers, the most in team history. Mike Jacobs and Ron Swoboda are second with 11. Alonso also has 34 RBI, the most in club history after 43 career games. Steve Henderson is second with 32. Alonso has 23 extra-base hits after 43 games, the most in team history, one more than David Wright.

In recognition of May being National Military Appreciation Month, MLB will observe Armed Forces Day, a day where citizens unite and honor military heroes for their service. This weekend, the Mets with other teams will wear camouflage caps and the left chest of each uniform will feature a patch centered on the stars and stripes silhouetted batter, while the right side of the caps will feature a five-starred emblem to represent the five branches of the U.S. Military.

Let’s go Mets!
