Man Utd ‘make contact’ with Antoine Griezmann as Barcelona transfer hangs in the balance
MANCHESTER UNITED have “made contact” with Antoine Griezmann with his proposed transfer to Barcelona now hanging in the balance, according to reports.
The French forward announced his intention to leave Atletico Madrid last week with the Red Devils initially not favourites to beat the La Liga side to his signature.
However, the manner in which the 28-year-old announced his intention to quit the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium has reportedly irritated Barcelona’s hierarchy.
Leadership at the Camp are also not unanimous about meeting his £108million release clause with some feeling the money could be better spent elsewhere.
United have since capitalised on the transfer limbo to re-establish communication with Griezmann on a possible deal, according to the Independent.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes to make Griezmann his first marquee signing at Old Trafford, with money freed up by Romelu Lukaku’s impending move to Inter Milan.
In 2017, Griezmann opted to stay at Atleti during their transfer ban, scuppering his potential move to Barcelona, with Man Utd then also in the running too.
And last summer Barca were again left frustrated as they put the moves on the World Cup winner, only to fall short.
But now, with Griezmann admitting he will finally leave the Wanda Metropolitano, Barcelona seemed destined to land their man.
Coach Ernesto Valverde even went as far to confirm negotiations were underway to snap up the former Real Sociedad attacker.

The Spanish manager even discussed how Griezmann might fit into his team: “If he comes to Barcelona, we’ll see.
“We’re talking about assumptions, about a player who may or may not come.
“These are footballers who play for other teams – he’s a great player, I’ve always said that.”
