Gujarat fake encounter: Justice Bedi Committee recommends action against police officers guilty of custodial killings

Justice (Retd) HS Bedi Monitoring Committee has recommended action against nine police officers who were found to be involved in three custodial killings in alleged fake encounters, which took place between 2002 and 2006 in Gujarat.The Committee in its final 229-page report submitted to the Supreme Court has said that out of 17 cases it has found "prima facie evidence of custodial killings" in three matters and suggested action against the police officers involved in these killings.The Committee... At a meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) on 11 January, WTO members considered a request from the United States for the establishment of a panel to rule on additional duties levied by Turkey on certain US imports. WTO members also formally adopted panel and Appellate Body rulings concerning tax measures in Brazil used to promote domestic production of automotive and high-tech goods as well as revised US “dolphin-safe” tuna labelling requirements.

Items proposed for consideration at the next meeting of Dispute Settlement Body

The WTO Secretariat has circulated a meeting notice and list of items proposed for the next meeting, on 11 January 2019, of the Dispute Settlement Body, which consists of all WTO members and oversees legal disputes among them. The meeting notice is circulated in the form of a document officially called an “airgram”.

Online registration for the 16th WIPO-WTO colloquium for teachers of intellectual property (IP) is now open. The colloquium, which will take place in Geneva from 17 to 27 June 2019, aims at helping teachers from developing countries and economies in transition to become more aware of the Geneva institutions, negotiations and other activities concerning intellectual property law and policy and to strengthen their countries’ independent research, policy analysis and teaching. The deadline to register online is 17 March.
