Rupee tumbles for 4th day; falls 19 paise to 71.24 vs USD

The rupee weakened further by 19 paise Wednesday to close at 71.24 against the US dollar amid a strengthening greenback and fresh capital outflows. Higher bond yields, which spiked on concerns that the government may over-shoot the fiscal deficit target in an election year, too weighed on the domestic unit, forex traders said. A total of 1,428 people died due to extreme weather events in 2018, which was also the sixth warmest year since 1901, a top government official said Wednesday. The average temperature over India during 2018 was "significantly above normal", the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement. The country's average season mean temperatures were also "above the average" with the winter season (January- February, +0.59 degree Celsius) being the fifth warmest since 1901 and the pre-monsoon season (March-May) the seventh warmest, it said. SC declines urgent hearing of Karti's plea seeking permission to go abroad

The Supreme Court Wednesday refused urgent hearing to a plea moved by Karti Chaidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, seeking permission to go abroad. Karti had filed the plea in November, seeking apex court's nod to go abroad. He is facing prosecution in INX Media money laundering case lodged by the ED and is also an accused in INX Media corruption case lodged by the CBI. Ford drives cobalt supply chain transparency with IBM blockchain

The American car manufacturing giant is conducting a blockchain trial in a bid to trace cobalt, found in the lithium-ion batteries used by electric cars, from a Chinese-owned mine in the Congo.
