SMEV seeks Rs 20,000 cr to promote electric vehicles

Electric vehicle (EV) makers' body SMEV Wednesday sought an allocation of Rs 20,000 crore in the next two years for promoting EVs in the country and also urged the government to impose a "notional green cess" on conventional vehicles in the upcoming interim Budget to fund the drive. Spelling out their budget wish list, the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) also said phase-II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) must be announced with a six-year plan and time-bound implementation. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan Wednesday said his party was willing to join hands with like-minded parties who are against corruption and focused on making Tamil Nadu a progressive state. Novel ice-repelling coating developed

Researchers have created a durable silicone polymer coating capable of repelling ice from any surface. Icy weather is blamed for multi-billion dollar losses every year in the US, including delays and damage related to air travel, infrastructure and power generation and transmission facilities, said researchers from the University of Houston. Finding effective, durable and environmentally stable de-icing materials has been stymied by the stubborn tenacity with which ice adheres to the materials on which it forms, they said. The Delhi High Court Wednesday said it will hear the appeal of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL), publisher of National Herald newspaper, on January 28 challenging the single judge order asking it to vacate its premises here. A bench headed by Chief Justice Rajendra Menon cited health issues and asked if the matter could be heard some other day.
