A police constable was killed while trying to stop a truck carrying bullocks in Chandrapur in Maharashtra, over 800 kilometres from here, police said Monday. The incident happened Sunday night at Khambada Vani Naka on the Nagpur-Chandrapur Road when constable Prakash Meshram, who was deployed on an anti-liquor check, tried to halt a truck carrying 12 bullocks, an official said. Militant held, arms and ammunition recovered in Assam

An NSCN(R) cadre was arrested and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered during separate raids in Assam's Tinsukia district, police said Monday. Acting on a tip-off, Army troops launched an operation near Tirap Colliery in Ledo town and nabbed the NSCN(R) militant on Monday. The militant has been identified as Singmai Haseng and a 7.65 mm pistol, a magazine and three rounds of ammunition have been recovered from him. NGT directs UPPCB to examine allegations of pollution by industry in Kanpur

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) to look into a complaint of an educational institute alleging that air pollution was being caused by an industrial unit in Kanpur. The Centre would soon take up a major project to link rivers Godavari and Cauvery that would resolve water issues between four southern states, Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari announced here Monday. Wealthy Qatar said on Monday it will purchase $500 million of government bonds in debt-ridden Lebanon a day after the country's emir visited Beirut to attend the Arab economic summit.
