Maldives issue warning amid spike in tourist drownings

Five tourists including a honeymooning couple have drowned in a single week in the Maldives, officials said, prompting a nationwide safety warning to holiday resorts in the pristine islands. Tourism officials said all resort operators in the paradise archipelago were urged Monday to keep a close eye on their clients after the spate of deaths. Metal stocks Tuesday slipped over 4 per cent, mainly due to weak macro data as China reported slowest GDP growth in 28 years. The loss in the metal stocks was led by Jindal Steel and Power Ltd as it fell 4.53 per cent to end at Rs 137.90 on BSE. Vedanta Ltd shed 3.50 per cent to Rs 191.45, while Tata Steel lost 3.13 per cent to settle at Rs 456.80. As many as 38 officers including five from friendly foreign navies completed a specialisation course at the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology (NIAT), Naval Base, here Tuesday. The passing out parade of the 58th Air Engineering and Air Electrical Officers Specialisation course (Aeronautical Engineers) was held at the Naval base. A total of 38 officers who passed out included 29 from the Indian Navy, four from Indian Coast Guard and five from friendly foreign navies of Vietnam, Mauritius and Bangladesh, a Defence release said.
