Nachdem das Ultimatum an Präsident Nicolas Maduro abgelaufen ist, haben mehrere europäische Länder, darunter Österreich, den jungen Abgeordneten am Montag als rechtmäßigen Übergangsstaatschef des südamerikanischen Krisenlandes anerkannt.
Österreich, Großbritannien, Spanien, Frankreich, Schweden und Dänemark haben den venezolanischen Oppositionsführer Juan Guaido am Montag als Interimspräsidenten anerkannt. Bundeskanzler Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) schrieb auf Spanisch auf Twitter, das Regime des amtierenden Präsidenten Nicolas Maduro habe die Frist der EU-Staaten verstreichen lassen, um freie und faire Präsidentschaftswahlen anzusetzen.
Im Kampf um die Macht in Venezuela wollen mehrere andere EU-Länder den Parlamentschef Juan Guaidó künftig als legitimen Übergangspräsidenten betrachten. Eine entsprechende Erklärung wurde im Laufe des Montags erwartet. Zuvor war ein Ultimatum von acht EU-Mitgliedsländern verstrichen: Sie hatten den umstrittenen Staatschef Nicolás Maduro aufgefordert, bis zum Wochenende eine Neuwahl anzusetzen.
Venezuelas Präsident Nicolas Maduro geht auf Konfrontation mit dem Westen. "Ich weigere mich, Wahlen auszurufen", sagte Maduro in einem am Sonntag im Fernsehsender "Antena 3" ausgestrahlten Interview. Die nächste Präsidentenwahl werde 2024 stattfinden.
