Eating nuts may reduce cardiovascular disease risk for people with diabetes

Eurekalert.org

People with type 2 diabetes who ate five servings of nuts per week enjoyed a 17 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease.Even a small amount of nuts made a difference, with a 3 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and 6 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease death for each additional weekly serving.Tree nuts appeared to offer more heart-healthy protection than peanuts.

Long periods of sedentary behavior may increase cardiovascular risk in older women

Eurekalert.org

A new study has found that the longer older women sit or lay down during the course of a day -- and the longer the individual periods of uninterrupted sitting--the greater their risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke. But reducing their sedentary time by just an hour a day appears to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 12 percent -- and for heart disease alone, by a dramatic 26 percent, the research found.

Engineered 'suicide genes' prevent tumors in stem cell-derived beta cells

Eurekalert.org

Scientists from the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami have engineered a human pluripotent stem cell line containing two 'suicide genes' that induce cell death in all but the desired insulin-producing cells. This double fail-safe approach addresses the limitations of pluripotent stem cell-derived beta cells and opens the door to creating safe cell-replacement therapies for people living with type 1 diabetes.

More cancer survivors, fewer cancer specialists point to challenge in meeting care needs

Eurekalert.org

An aging population, a growing number of cancer survivors, and a projected shortage of cancer care providers will result in a challenge in delivering the care for cancer survivors in the United States if systemic changes are not made. UNC Lineberger's Deborah K. Mayer, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN, and American Cancer Society's Catherine M. Alfano, PhD, published a commentary in JNCI that outlines an approach to address the shortfall.

Transformations demystified

Eurekalert.org

(University of California - Santa Barbara) A wealth of potential exists in inorganic synthesis for the development of advanced materials that can perform sophisticated functions and drive complex processes. Researchers have long been developing a body of knowledge to map these chemical reactions and predict their results. Particularly in the relatively new subdiscipline of nanocluster synthesis, a little less guesswork could go a long way.

Researcher earns federal grant to study molecule's potential as cancer drug target

Eurekalert.org

(University of Oklahoma) Ralf Janknecht, Ph.D., a researcher in the Department of Cell Biology at the OU College of Medicine, has been analyzing the behavior of a particular molecule that is over produced in breast cancer. This year, he was awarded a five-year, $1.78 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to further evaluate the molecule's potential in reducing cancer metastasis.

New open-source bioinformatics tool identifies factors responsible for diseases

Eurekalert.org

(Boston University School of Medicine) Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have developed and tested a new computational tool, Candidate Driver Analysis (CaDrA), which will search for combinations of factors that are likely to cause a specific disease. CaDrA recognizes that diseases are complex and likely induced by multiple causes. It is now available free to members of the research community.
