As announced, LG has launched its first ever 5G phone: The LG V50 ThinQ. But unlike Huawei's radical, foldable 5G phone, which launched earlier today, the V50 is essentially a proper successor of LG's V40, only with 5G capabilities. 

Last year, LG released the G7 ThinQ — by no means a bad phone, but certainly one that struggled to make its mark. At this year’s MWC, LG is announcing its successor, the LG G8, which brings some new features and upgrades to try to stand out where the G7 faded into the background.

LG is getting in on the 5G hype with the new V50 ThinQ — an updated version of the V40 from last fall that keeps the same basic design, but adds support for the next-generation network.

If you haven’t already soaked up the leaks about it, the new LG V50 introduced today is a souped-up V40 with the new Snapdragon 855 processor, improved cooling, bigger battery, and the futuristic addition of 5G. The V50 is LG’s first 5G phone, in fact, and it’s also the first to be compatible with a new accessory the company is rolling out: an entire second screen.

One of the smallest of the first 5G phones. This top-end flagship phone is similar — in size and features — to last year's V40. Features include a large battery, three rear cameras (standard, wide, and tele), two front cameras (standard and wide), 6.4-inch OLED screen with quad-HD resolution, top-end processor, high-end audio, wireless charging, NFC, water resistance, fingerprint reader, 3.5mm audio jack, and memory card slot.

This update to the G7 adds a 3D depth camera to the front, supporting mid-air gestures, hand vein scanning, and 3D face scanning. Other features of this flagship phone include a thin body of curved glass and metal, quad-HD display with notch, and dual cameras: one standard and one wide-angle, Snapdragon 855 chip, high-end audio chip, extra-loud speaker, wireless charging, NFC, water resistance, 3.5mm audio jack, and memory card slot.
