Maharashtra registered 55.97 per cent voting till 5.30 pm across seven constituencies in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections Thursday, officials said. Final figures will be announced Friday as polling was on till 8 pm in some centres, said an election official. Additional chief electoral officer Dilip Shinde said no voting could be held at four polling centres in Aheri tehsil of Gadchiroli district due to Naxal "activities". A total of 15 electronic voting machines (EVMs) were damaged due to vandalism in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election Thursday, the Election Commission said. While there were six reports of EVM damage from Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh reported five matters, one each were from West Bengal and Bihar and two from Manipur. Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha said action would be taken for damaging electoral material and various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

At least one person was hospitalised with injuries after a clash broke out between groups supporting Lok Sabha candidates from rival parties in Sikandrabad region here Thursday, officials said.
