Seropositivities against brucellosis, coxiellosis, and toxoplasmosis and associated factors in pregnant women with adverse pregnancy outcomes: A cross-sectional study

Plos.org

by Kan Kledmanee, Tippawan Liabsuetrakul, Somporn Sretrirutchai

Background

Brucellosis, coxiellosis, and toxoplasmosis can be transmitted from infected ruminants to pregnant women and may induce adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, there are to date few studies. This study aimed to examine the seropositivities of immunoglobulin G (IgG) against those three pathogens among pregnant women with adverse pregnancy outcomes, and to explore the associated factors.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Thailand... Читать дальше...

In vivo activity and low toxicity of the second-generation antimicrobial peptide DGL13K

Plos.org

by Sven-Ulrik Gorr, Craig M. Flory, Robert J. Schumacher

Antimicrobial peptides have been evaluated as possible alternatives to traditional antibiotics. The translational potential of the antimicrobial peptide DGL13K was tested with focus on peptide toxicity and in vivo activity in two animal models. DGL13K was effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus with minimal bactericidal concentrations similar to the minimal inhibitory concentration. Immunocapture of virions with virus-specific antibodies prior to high-throughput sequencing effectively enriches for virus-specific sequences

Plos.org

by Dennis Knierim, Wulf Menzel, Stephan Winter

Virus discovery based on high-throughput sequencing relies on enrichment for virus sequences prior to library preparation to achieve a sufficient number of viral reads. In general, preparations of double-stranded RNA or total RNA preparations treated to remove rRNA are used for sequence enrichment. We used virus-specific antibodies to immunocapture virions from plant sap to conduct cDNA synthesis, followed by library preparation and HTS. For the four potato viruses PLRV... Читать дальше...

Assessment of complex projectiles in the early Late Pleistocene at Aduma, Ethiopia

Plos.org

by Yonatan Sahle, Alison S. Brooks

Complex projectiles—propulsion via mechanical aid—are considered an important technological innovation, with possible relevance for the successful Out-of-Africa dispersal of our species. Conclusive evidence for the beginning of this technology, however, is lacking from the early Late Pleistocene (ca. 130 to 70 thousand years ago; ka). Given the extremely limited applicability of relatively robust methods for validating stone-tipped projectile use, such as through fracture propagation velocity... Читать дальше...

Participation pattern of methadone users and its association with social connection and HIV status: Analyses of electronic health records data

Plos.org

by Tsz Ho Kwan, Ngai Sze Wong, Shui Shan Lee

Background

HIV spread in injecting drug users (IDU) occurs efficiently between individuals within their social networks. While methadone maintenance treatment has long known to be effective in combating HIV transmission in IDU, the impacts of one’s social connections and HIV status have not been well characterised. A study was conducted with the objective of differentiating the pattern of treatment participation between HIV-positive and negative... Читать дальше...

Comparing genotype and chemotype of Fusarium graminearum from cereals in Ontario, Canada

Plos.org

by Trinda Crippin, Justin B. Renaud, Mark W. Sumarah, J. David Miller

Fusarium graminearum is responsible for production of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) on maize and wheat in Ontario, Canada. It has been understood since the early 1980s that in most parts of Canada, the predominant chemotype of F. graminearum is 15ADON, and not the 3ADON chemotype mainly found in Europe and Asia. The discovery of F. graminearum strains that did not produce DON but the structurally related 7-α hydroxy... Читать дальше...

Derivation of mimetic γδ T cells endowed with cancer recognition receptors from reprogrammed γδ T cell

Plos.org

by Jieming Zeng, Shin Yi Tang, Shu Wang

Using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to derive chimeric antigen receptor-modified T (CAR-T) cells has great industrial potential. A previous study used αβ T cell-derived CAR-modified iPSCs to produce CAR-T cells. However, these αβ T cells are restricted to autologous use and only recognize single cancer antigen. To make CAR-T alternative for allogeneic use, we reprogrammed γδ T cell into iPSCs (γδ T-iPSCs) to circumvent the risk of graft-versus-host disease. Читать дальше...
