Analysis of host cell binding specificity mediated by the Tp0136 adhesin of the syphilis agent Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum

Plos.org

by Vitomir Djokic, Lorenzo Giacani, Nikhat Parveen

Background

Syphilis affects approximately 11 million people each year globally, and is the third most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the United States. Inability to independently culture and genetically manipulate Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, the causative agent of this disease, has hindered our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of syphilis pathogenesis. Here, we used the non-infectious and poorly adherent... Читать дальше...

Satellite DNA-containing gigantic introns in a unique gene expression program during Drosophila spermatogenesis

Plos.org

by Jaclyn M. Fingerhut, Jessica V. Moran, Yukiko M. Yamashita

Intron gigantism, where genes contain megabase-sized introns, is observed across species, yet little is known about its purpose or regulation. Here we identify a unique gene expression program utilized for the proper expression of genes with intron gigantism. We find that two Drosophila genes with intron gigantism, kl-3 and kl-5, are transcribed in a spatiotemporal manner over the course of spermatocyte differentiation, which spans ~90 hours. Estimating variance components in population scale family trees

Plos.org

by Tal Shor, Iris Kalka, Dan Geiger, Yaniv Erlich, Omer Weissbrod

The rapid digitization of genealogical and medical records enables the assembly of extremely large pedigree records spanning millions of individuals and trillions of pairs of relatives. Such pedigrees provide the opportunity to investigate the sociological and epidemiological history of human populations in scales much larger than previously possible. Linear mixed models (LMMs) are routinely used to analyze extremely large... Читать дальше...

A neuromechanistic model for rhythmic beat generation

Plos.org

by Amitabha Bose, Áine Byrne, John Rinzel

When listening to music, humans can easily identify and move to the beat. Numerous experimental studies have identified brain regions that may be involved with beat perception and representation. Several theoretical and algorithmic approaches have been proposed to account for this ability. Related to, but different from the issue of how we perceive a beat, is the question of how we learn to generate and hold a beat. In this paper, we introduce a neuronal... Читать дальше...

Macroscopic phase resetting-curves determine oscillatory coherence and signal transfer in inter-coupled neural circuits

Plos.org

by Grégory Dumont, Boris Gutkin

Macroscopic oscillations of different brain regions show multiple phase relationships that are persistent across time and have been implicated in routing information. While multiple cellular mechanisms influence the network oscillatory dynamics and structure the macroscopic firing motifs, one of the key questions is to identify the biophysical neuronal and synaptic properties that permit such motifs to arise. A second important issue is how the different neural... Читать дальше...

Fat body–specific vitellogenin expression regulates host-seeking behaviour in the mosquito Aedes albopictus

Plos.org

by Jessica Dittmer, Ayad Alafndi, Paolo Gabrieli

The high vector competence of mosquitoes is intrinsically linked to their reproductive strategy because females need a vertebrate blood meal to develop large batches of eggs. However, the molecular mechanisms and pathways regulating mosquito host-seeking behaviour are largely unknown. Here, we test whether host-seeking behaviour may be linked to the female’s energy reserves, with low energy levels triggering the search for a nutrient-rich blood meal. Читать дальше...

Male contraception hasn't changed much since the condom was invented over 5,000 years ago. You can blame biology.

ThisIsinsider.com

  • The condom was invented more than 5,000 years ago. While it's made some strides since then, men are still left with few options for birth control, besides a vasectomy.
  • It's not due to a lack of interest, but a lack of funding for research — and biology.
  • Men produce millions of sperm each day. Even if that count is reduced by 90%, they could still be fertile.
  • There are new methods coming, but experts say it will be years, if not decades, before they hit the market. Читать дальше...
