In the last sixty years, the Granite State’s first-in-the-nation primary has crushed the ambitions of many a presidential hopeful—including incumbent presidents. The nearly two dozen Democratic candidates now descending on New Hampshire understand this all too well.

My book, An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States, was published five years ago and has found a wide readership, especially among teachers and college students. Now, the book has been brilliantly adapted for young readers by Jean Mendoza and Debbie Reese, both scholars specializing in the absence or flawed presence of American Indians in children’s literature. 

Just months before his 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, Adolf Hitler took aim at a familiar target: the Treaty of Versailles. He announced categorically, “so long as this treaty stands there can be no resurrection of the German people.” A decade later, Hitler declared “all the problems which are causing such unrest today lie in the deficiencies of the Treaty of Peace [Versailles].”

However, at the heart of the joke, a more serious problem stands out. “Beware the Ides of March.” Those words of warning from a Roman soothsayer to the great Julius Caesar have—thanks to William Shakespeare—resonated through the ages. They still strike a chord today. Had Caesar not ignored them, his brutal betrayal and murder might not have happened and probably would not have been chronicled in one of those Shakespearean Tragedies.
