CSIR-CMERI develops technology for quality drinking water

With water scarcity looming large across the globe, CSIR and Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) of Durgapur on Tuesday announced the development of new technologies for supply of quality drinking water. India is facing drinking water crisis and a Niti Aayog report has predicted that 21 cities of the country would have no drinking water of its own by next year. Crane operator dies as girder falls on him in Hyderabad

In a freak incident, a 45-year-old crane operator died here Tuesday when the load fell on him, after he jumped out of the cabin, police said. Gurpreet Singh (45) jumped out of his cabin after the machine started tilting and started running away from it, but the girder fell on him, they said. The crane, used for flyover construction work at Shaikpet, was loosely fixed on the ground, they added. Hyderabad Mayor B Rammohan announced an ex gratia of Rs 13 lakh to the kin of the deceased, who hailed from Punjab.

Agri-warehousing cos seek GST waiver ahead of Union Budget

Days ahead of the Union Budget, agri-warehousing companies have sought waiver of the 18 per cent GST imposed on such services to boost the farming community. "The Centre should relook at the GST on agri- warehousing services. It is raising the cost of farmers. I think the government should waive the GST on this sector," said Paran Dass, Transportation Director of Japanese warehousing major Kawasaki Rikuso. A proposal for granting classical language status to Marathi is under active consideration, Union Culture Minister Prahlad Patel informed the Parliament on Tuesday. In a reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Patel pointed out that the Madras High Court had disposed off writ petitions and declined to interfere in the matter. People with vitamin D deficiency from birth to early childhood are at an increased risk of elevated systolic blood pressure during adolescence, a study has found. The show must go on. And it did, despite a theft at a Calgary musical theatre company. The Front Row Centre Players have just wrapped up an adaptation of the '90s comedy The Wedding Singer. Darren Stewart, with the theatre company, says about halfway through the show's run at the Beddington Theatre Arts Centre volunteers discovered they had been robbed.
