Torture allegedly committed by soldiers and police officers in Thailand against detainees in recent years has usually happened behind closed doors, involving techniques that leave no bruises or visible wounds. This fact provides a strong enough reason for one to suspect whether the army's detention of insurgent suspect Abdulloh Esormusor on Saturday night -- that resulted in him suffering a...
Thursday's parliamentary debate on the government's policy manifesto looks set to be a fiery one after the opposition vowed on Tuesday to lay bare the controversial qualifications of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his two junta brothers.
The tanker battles are escalating once again, but the threat of outages and rising tension in the Persian Gulf has failed to meaningfully move oil prices. On Friday, Iranian forces seized a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, sending a shock of alarm through the oil market and leading to another round of escalation between Iran and western powers. A second boat was also stopped by Iranian forces, although it was later released. But despite tough talk from the UK government – threatening “serious... Читать дальше...

Coral reefs of the North Indo-West Pacific provide important ecosystem services to the region but are subjected to multiple local and global threats. Strengthening management measures necessitate understanding the variability of larval connectivity and bridging global connectivity models to local scales. An individual-based Lagrangian biophysical model was used to simulate connectivity between coral reefs for three organisms with different early life history characteristics... Читать дальше...

The halophyte Suaeda salsa displayed strong resistance to salinity. Up to date, molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance of S. salsa to salinity have not been well understood. In the present study, S. salsa seedlings were treated with 30‰ salinity and then leaves and roots were subjected to Illumina sequencing. Compared with the control, 68,599 and 77,250 unigenes were significantly differentially expressed in leaves and roots in saline treatment, respectively. Читать дальше...

Recent evidence has raised in discussion the possibility that cannabidiol can act as a negative allosteric modulator of the cannabinoid type 1 receptor. Here we have used computational methods to study the modulation exerted by cannabidiol on the effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in the cannabinoid receptor type 1 and the possibility of direct receptor blockade. We propose a putative allosteric binding site that is located in the N-terminal region of receptor... Читать дальше...
