Automated analysis of soft hydrogel microindentation: Impact of various indentation parameters on the measurement of Young’s modulus

Plos.org

by Steven Huth, Sandra Sindt, Christine Selhuber-Unkel

Measurements of Young’s moduli are mostly evaluated using strong assumptions, such as sample homogeneity and isotropy. At the same time, descriptions of measurement parameters often lack detailed specifications. Many of these assumptions are, for soft hydrogels especially, not completely valid and the complexity of hydrogel microindentation demands more sophisticated experimental procedures in order to describe their elastic properties more accurately. Unraveling the structural landscape of intra-chain domain interfaces: Implication in the evolution of domain-domain interactions

Plos.org

by Rivi Verma, Shashi Bhushan Pandit

Intra-chain domain interactions are known to play a significant role in the function and stability of multidomain proteins. These interactions are mediated through a physical interaction at domain-domain interfaces (DDIs). With a motivation to understand evolution of interfaces, we have investigated similarities among DDIs. Even though interfaces of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) have been previously studied by structurally aligning interfaces, similar... Читать дальше...

Perceived social support functions as a resilience in buffering the impact of trauma exposure on PTSD symptoms via intrusive rumination and entrapment in firefighters

Plos.org

by Jong-Sun Lee

Resilience has been highlighted as a pivotal factor in overcoming the detrimental impact of trauma. The present study tests a resilience model of trauma using risk (rumination, emotion regulation, and entrapment) and protective (perceived social support) factors in a sample of firefighters who are at heightened risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, using a cross-sectional design. Specifically, the present study focuses on perceived social support as a resilience factor against PTSD symptoms... Читать дальше...

Living on the edge: Assessing the diversity of South African Pocillopora on the margins of the Southwestern Indian Ocean

Plos.org

by Brent Chiazzari, Hélène Magalon, Pauline Gélin, Angus Macdonald

Scleractinia of the Maputaland reef complex (MRC) in South Africa exist at the margins of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) coral distribution and are the only substantial hermatypic coral communities in South Africa. Pocillopora species occupy a conspicuous component of the MRC, and previous investigations identified three species of Pocillopora utilizing conventional taxonomy. Thus, our aims were four-fold: to elucidate Pocillopora... Читать дальше...

Environmental factors influencing fungal growth on gypsum boards and their structural biodeterioration: A university campus case study

Plos.org

by Negin Kazemian, Sepideh Pakpour, Abbas S. Milani, John Klironomos

The new era in the design of modern healthy buildings necessitates multidisciplinary research efforts that link principles of engineering and material sciences with those of building biology, in order to better comprehend and apply underlying interactions among design criteria. As part of this effort, there have been an array of studies in relation to the effects of building characteristics on indoor microbiota and their propensity to cause health issues. Читать дальше...

Change in sedative burden after dementia onset using difference-in-difference estimations

Plos.org

by Young-Mi Ah, Euna Han, Kwanghee Jun, Yun Mi Yu, Ju-Yeun Lee

Background

Sedative agents are avoided in older adults because of potential risks including cognitive impairment, fall, frailty, and mortality. However, no studies addressing both prediagnostic and postdiagnostic period of dementia have evaluated sedative agent usage over an extended period.

Objectives

To describe a longitudinal change in sedative medication use before and after the diagnosis with dementia over 10 years compared to patients without dementia. Читать дальше...
