BackgroundPerceived as a minor transportation mode mainly for recreation, cycling and its related safety issues have not been treated as a citywide concern in Hong Kong and have thus received inadequate research efforts. Our study aimed to illuminate the safety challenges faced by cyclists in Hong Kong.
MethodsWe examined the police crash records from 1998 to 2017 and developed a Bayesian Poisson state space model to evaluate the... Читать дальше...

Klotho is a soluble or membrane-bound anti-aging protein, whose protective actions are important for a prudential function of many organs. Because Klotho and cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) are associated with ageing process and endothelial dysfunction, it is possible that Klotho has an association with cerebral SVD. We aimed to investigate the association of plasma Klotho concentration with the presence, burden and progression of cerebral SVD. Читать дальше...

Putting oneself in the shoes of a digital alter ego becomes an increasingly relevant part of our everyday experience. In modern day psychology, these interactions can be examined within the frameworks of visual perspective taking and body ownership. Both target similar questions: What does it take, to become one with the avatar? When do we show the same behavior and make the same experiences, as if we were in its place? In this study, we want to address... Читать дальше...

Although ascites is a distressing complication observed commonly in the course of advanced cancer, there is no effective treatment established for malignancy-related ascites. We conducted a nationwide survey of cancer physicians in Japan who treat malignancy-related ascites in order to determine what kind of therapeutic approach is thought to be significant and what kind of diuretic prescriptions are thought to be standard for malignancy-related ascites. There is increasing evidence showing that pleiotropy is a widespread phenomenon in complex diseases for which multiple correlated traits are often measured. Joint analysis of multiple traits could increase statistical power by aggregating multiple weak effects. Existing methods for multiple trait association tests usually study each of the multiple traits separately and then combine the univariate test statistics or combine p-values of... Читать дальше...

The bacterial strain WD-2, which was capable of efficiently degrading prochloraz-manganese, was isolated from soil contaminated with prochloraz-manganese, selected through enrichment culturing and identified as Bacillus cereus. Test results indicated that the optimal temperature and pH for bacterial growth were 35–40°C and 7.0–8.0, respectively. The highest degradation rate was above 88–90% when the pH was 7.0~8.0 and reached a maximum value (90.7%) at approximately 8.0. In addition... Читать дальше...

The heterogeneous nucleation of ice processes involving loess particles that influences the formation of mixed-phase clouds are poorly understood. Here, the ice nucleating ability of wind-blown dust or loess accumulated from the past glaciated area was investigated at three temperatures: -26, -30, and -34 °C and at below and above saturation with respect to liquid water conditions. Total six loess samples from different regions across Columbia Basin province, WA, USA were collected... Читать дальше...
