A non-linear analysis of Turing pattern formation

Plos.org

by Yanyan Chen, Javier Buceta

Reaction-diffusion schemes are widely used to model and interpret phenomena in various fields. In that context, phenomena driven by Turing instabilities are particularly relevant to describe patterning in a number of biological processes. While the conditions that determine the appearance of Turing patterns and their wavelength can be easily obtained by a linear stability analysis, the estimation of pattern amplitudes requires cumbersome calculations due to non-linear terms. Study on field experiments of forest soil thermoelectric power generation devices

Plos.org

by Yongsheng Huang, Daochun Xu, Jiangming Kan, Wenbin Li

As a new strategy to power forest wireless sensors in remote areas, an environmental microenergy collection device has been improved, and field experiments were carried out under natural conditions for the first time. The thermoelectric power generation devices used a gravity-assisted heat pipe to transmit heat from shallow soil to ground level, and a thermoelectric generator (TEG) was employed to generate electric power from the temperature difference between soil and air. Prevalence of non-communicable diseases among HIV positive patients on antiretroviral therapy at joint clinical research centre, Lubowa, Uganda

Plos.org

by Sheila Kansiime, Doris Mwesigire, Henry Mugerwa

Introduction

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has changed the course of HIV/AIDs by enabling patients to live longer, raising concern of the co- existence of HIV with other chronic illnesses, notably non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs are on the rise in developing countries and evidence shows higher occurrence among people living with HIV (PLHIV). In Uganda, the burden of NCDs among PLHIV remains largely unquantified.

Objective

To determine the prevalence of hypertension... Читать дальше...

Spatial clustering of notified tuberculosis in Ethiopia: A nationwide study

Plos.org

by Kefyalew Addis Alene, Archie C. A. Clements

Background

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health problem worldwide and in Ethiopia. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distributions of notified TB over the whole territory of Ethiopia and to quantify the role of health care access, environmental, socio-demographic, and behavioural factors associated with the clustering of TB.

Methods

A spatial analysis was conducted using national TB data reported between June 2016 and June 2017 in Ethiopia. Читать дальше...

Leptospira infection in rats: A literature review of global prevalence and distribution

Plos.org

by Kenneth Boey, Kanae Shiokawa, Sreekumari Rajeev

Background

The role of rodents in Leptospira epidemiology and transmission is well known worldwide. Rats are known to carry different pathogenic serovars of Leptospira spp. capable of causing disease in humans and animals. Wild rats (Rattus spp.), especially the Norway/brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) and the black rat (R. rattus), are the most important sources of Leptospira infection, as they are abundant in urban and peridomestic environments. A generative learning model for saccade adaptation

Plos.org

by Carlos R. Cassanello, Florian Ostendorf, Martin Rolfs

Plasticity in the oculomotor system ensures that saccadic eye movements reliably meet their visual goals—to bring regions of interest into foveal, high-acuity vision. Here, we present a comprehensive description of sensorimotor learning in saccades. We induced continuous adaptation of saccade amplitudes using a double-step paradigm, in which participants saccade to a peripheral target stimulus, which then undergoes a surreptitious,...
