Victorian Vendors Prepare for Great Southern Sale
Winter is coming, which also means the last big sale of the season is also just around the corner. The four-day Inglis Great Southern Sale begins at Oaklands Junction on Sunday 16th June 2019.
The sale will see stock from 112 represented vendors, 85 of which are Victorian. A total of 871 entries have been received, consisting of 530 weanlings, 285 broodmares, 54 racing stock, one stallion and one stallion share.
In the historical town of Smeaton, Nioka Wozny of MOOROOKYLE PARK is preparing to present 3 weanlings for purchase. Lot 276, a colt out of Mikumi, is by Toronado, the winning sire of last month’s inaugural $1 million The Showdown.
Lot 347 is a filly by first season sire Rich Enuff, from Piece of Class. The dam has had 2 winners from 4 foals to race.
Lot 423, a brown Zoustar filly, is out of Something Magical, a half-sister to 7-time winner in Singapore, Taichi Master. This filly is her third foal.
Paul Kelly and Sue Miller, from PONDEROSA PARK in northern Victoria’s Nathalia, will have 23 weanlings on parade for buyers, including 2 that are progeny of the farm’s own sire Niconoise. Lot 71 is a filly out of Cerro Vista, from the same family as Pretty Penny, Dollar for Dollar whilst the Exabaa colt will go through as lot 127.
By deceased champion sire, Redoute’s Choice, Niconoise won four city races from 1100m to 1800m and still holds the Flemington 1700m track record he set in February 2013. He has excellent bloodlines, being a three-quarter brother to 5-time Group 1 winner Niconero and half-brother to dual Group 1 winning sprinter Nicconi. He ran in the Australian Cup the race after breaking the track record, however suffered a serious leg injury and was subsequently retired to Ponderosa Park in 2014.
The draft standout is lot 122, a Squamosa x Empress Ida colt. He is a full-brother to Kiwi Ida, a 10-time winner in New Zealand, including the Group 3 Canterbury Breeders Stakes.
“I’ve already received a few phone calls about this colt and he should prove to be quite popular,” said Paul.
The strong draft also features progeny from a number of other Victorian stallions including a colt and filly by Sun Stud’s Palentino. The filly is out of Little Things, a half-sister to dual-Group winner Ringadingding (lot 249), whilst the colt’s dam Sea Horse, is a half-sister to the fantastic sprinter Hay List (lot 393).
One of their two Foxwedge fillies (lot 437) is out of Staying Good, a full-sister to Chris Waller’s Queensland Oaks hopeful Guise. There is also progeny of Trust in a Gust, Fighting Sun, as well as a colt out of Adelaide Cup winner Lacey Underall, by shuttle stallion Mshawish (USA) (lot 224).
“This is the biggest and strongest draft we’ve ever presented,” said Paul.
“We’ve focused on the weanling sales and we’re bringing our best. While Victoria continues to produce good horses, we’ll keep using the strong Victorian stallions available. It’s a pleasure to sell at the Great Southern Sale and all Ponderosa homegrown horses will be paid up for the VOBIS program.”
Weanlings will be offered on the first two days of the sale, broodmares on Tuesday June 18 and yearlings and racing stock on Wednesday June 19.
Also catalogued is one share in stallion Tosen Stardom, who stands at Woodside Park Stud.
