Jaap Stam sends message to Man United about Matthijs de Ligt
Jaap Stam believes that Matthijs de Ligt would be a great addition to the Manchester United team.
The Netherlands international has established himself as one of the most exciting talents in Europe over the past 12 months or so following his performances in the Champions League.
Although De Ligt is only 19, the Ajax defender played a vital role in the Dutch club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals before they lost to Tottenham Hotspur on away goals in the last four.
The teenager was particularly impressive as Ajax managed to beat both Spanish giants Real Madrid and Serie A champions Juventus on the road in the Champions League knockout stage.
De Ligt was thought to be on his way to FC Barcelona but a potential deal appears to have hit a stumbling block to open the door for Manchester United to swoop in, with recent reports claiming that the Red Devils are still interested in a deal.
Former Manchester United and Netherlands defender Stam believes De Ligt would be a good fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
“I think he would suit very well over here if they’re trying to pick him up,” Stam told Press Association Sport, as quoted by the Evening Standard.
“I am not sure if that’s the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.
“But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well.
“He’s the type of player that a manager, I think, wants to work with.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table in the most recent campaign to miss out on a spot in the Champions League next season.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson led Manchester United to triumph in his final season in charge.
