Apple launches £400 new iPod Touch – and it can carry a whopping 30,000 songs
APPLE has announced a new version of the iPod Touch with a beefed up engine and storage options.
The touch-screen music player helped put Apple on the map following the release of the iPhone, but this is its first update in nearly four years.
The headline feature is a bolstered processor – Apple has stuck in the same A10 chip that it stuck in last year’s iPad.
That should help the gizmo perform better when handling heavy-duty tasks like HD gaming.
“We’re making the most affordable iOS device even better with performance that is twice as fast as before,” said Greg Joswiak, who heads up Apple’s product marketing team.
“The ultra-thin and lightweight design of iPod touch has always made it ideal for enjoying games, music and so much more wherever you go.”
Apple has also added an extra memory option to the Touch.
You can now stick a whopping 256GB worth of music on the player, or about 33,000 songs.
The seventh generation iPod Touch starts at £199 for the basic 32GB model.
You can splash a bit of extra cash for more memory: A 128GB model is going for £299 while the 256GB model will cost you £399.
The new iPod touch is available to order on Apple’s website starting today, and in stores later this week.
Apple released the first iPod in 2001, with then-CEO Steve Jobs promising to let users “fit your entire music library in your pocket”.
The iPod Touch was released a few months after the groundbreaking first iPhone in 2007.
The Touch has now gone through seven iterations, but is the only type of iPod that Apple still sells.
That’s because the rise of beefed-up smartphones with massive amounts of storage has largely made the pocket music player obsolete.
