Best desks 2019 – our top picks for stand-up working, style, storage and slightly different

0

MAKE working from the dining table or breakfast bar a thing of the past by investing in one of the best desks on the market.

After all, a kitchen isn’t always the most conducive place to work, and neither is sitting hunched over on the sofa.

Before you buy, you’ll want to take into account how much you’ll actually be using your new office space.

If you work from home, it’s a good idea to invest in a desk that offers you not only room to spread out, but also some storage for files and books.

However, if you’re looking to use it more for admin and the occasional spot of online shopping, then you may not need any storage or as much desk space.

Then there’s the look of your desk – do you want something sleek with clean lines, or do you prefer a more traditional-looking piece? There are so many variations these days, from Scandi-style additions with tapered legs to more officey-looking, sturdy desks with drawers on either side – there really is something for everyone.

Live in an open-plan layout, and unsure of the best place for a desk? A design on castors can be wheeled out of the way at the end of the day.

It’s also worth considering whether you’re likely to be using a computer or laptop, as that will dictate the size of the desk you buy. And, if you’re short on space and don’t believe you have room for a desk, then think again.

Small, standing desks, wall-mounted workspaces and compact options make it possible no matter how large (or small) your room.

Still unsure? Check out our pick of the best desks around and give yourself the desk space you deserve.

Sleek & Sturdy

Very
  • Bilbao High Gloss Desk, £269, Very – buy here

Looking for a modern desk with plenty of storage? This sleek-looking beauty is a top contender.

Part of the Bilbao range by Ideal Home, it features handleless doors in a super-shiny gloss finish and comes in both white (shown) or grey. It won’t let you down on the storage front either – two cupboards (each with removable shelves) and a pair of drawers make the perfect spot for folders, files and stationery.

And, if you don’t like the thought of flatpack furniture you’ll be pleased to hear it comes ready assembled.

Black Beauty

Barker and Stonehouse
  • Cannelle Desk, £425 from Barker & Stonehouse – buy here

Oozing sophistication and high-class looks, you’d be hard pressed to decide whether the Cannelle is more desk or dressing table.

Either way, we love it. The black ash veneer top works perfectly with its contrasting brushed gold, tapered legs and handles, for an elegant look that had us at hello.

Two sliding drawers offer (minimal) storage, and with a width of 115cm you can be assured it won’t take up too much room.

Off the Wall

MADE
  • Esme Wall Desk, £149 from Made.com – buy here

No room to swing a cat in your home? Don’t worry, we’ve got the ideal office solution in the form of this Esme wall desk from Made.

Yes, you heard right, it’s a desk that’s designed to be mounted on the wall so as not to take up any floor space, and measures just 60cm in width.

Fed up of office mess littering your space? Well, the Esme even folds up when not in use, so you can hide your work spot away when you’re done.

Made from plywood sheets with an ash veneer, this desk’s beautiful rounded curves offer a slightly retro feel, and there are matching furniture pieces available, too, should you want.

Stand Tall

IKEA
  • Knotten Standing Desk, £120 from Ikea – buy here

Not the sitting down type? Then don’t, stand instead.

This uber-modern standing design from Ikea in white birch is 105cm high and can be placed anywhere, even in the middle of the room, as the back is finished.

Not convinced? You may like the storage it offers, as for such a compact design it has a spot for everything.

You’ll note the drawers and shelves, but look a little closer and you’ll spot hooks (ideal for keys or headphones) and a handy cable management system, too. Nifty.

Price Buster

Argos

Bargain alert: at just £50, you can’t go wrong with this neat grey-coloured wood desk from Argos Home.

Featuring plenty of worktop and storage space, one of the shelves is adjustable so you can set it up to suit you, while the cupboard and open shelves create a good mix of storage options.

It measures 99.6cm in width and comes ready to assemble.

Perfectly Pretty

Oliver Bonas
  • Meghan Unstained Mango Wood Desk, £375 from Oliver Bonas – buy here

We all know a desk needs to be functional, but if you’re looking for something slightly more feminine in style then you can’t do much better than this handcrafted design.

Combining an unstained wood finish with pops of colour and metallic accents, the Meghan is finished with gold-toned handles inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Made from mango wood, this stylish number features four drawers and a narrow shelf with a cable hole for leads. Just beautiful.

Traditional Touch

John Lewis
  • Abacus Corner Desk, £229 from John Lewis – buy here

Tight on space? Consider a corner design for a snug fit.

Made from oak veneer, the Abacus is a sturdy, solid desk that features four fixed shelves and a nice-sized top from which to work.

Plus, it also gives you the option of buying a compatible keyboard tray that can slot neatly underneath should you want.
