Controlling light with light

Spacedaily.com

Boston MA (SPX) Feb 07, 2020 - The future of computation is bright - literally. Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), in collaboration with researchers at McMaster University and University of Pittsburgh, have developed a new platform for all-optical computing, meaning computations done solely with beams of light.

"Most computation right now uses hard materials such as metal wires, semiconductors and photodiodes to couple electronics to light," said Amos Meeks... Читать дальше...

Galaxy formation simulated without dark matter

Spacedaily.com

Bonn, Germany (SPX) Feb 10, 2020 - For the first time, researchers from the Universities of Bonn and Strasbourg have simulated the formation of galaxies in a universe without dark matter. To replicate this process on the computer, they have instead modified Newton's laws of gravity. The galaxies that were created in the computer calculations are similar to those we actually see today. According to the scientists, their assumptions could solve many mysteries of modern cosmology. The results are published in the Astrophysical Journal. Читать дальше...

Tel Aviv university researchers demonstrate optical backflow of light

Spacedaily.com

Tel Aviv, Israel (SPX) Feb 07, 2020 - Researchers at Tel Aviv University have for the first time demonstrated the backflow of optical light propagating forward. The phenomenon, theorized more than 50 years ago by quantum physicists, has never before been demonstrated successfully in any experiment - until now.

"This 'backflow' phenomenon is quite delicate and requires exquisite control over the state of a particle, so its demonstration was hindered for half a century," explains Dr. Alon Bahabad... Читать дальше...

Space super-storm likelihood estimated from longest period of magnetic field observations

Spacedaily.com

Warwick UK (SPX) Jan 30, 2020 - A 'great' space weather super-storm large enough to cause significant disruption to our electronic and networked systems occurred on average once in every 25 years according to a new joint study by the University of Warwick and the British Antarctic Survey.

By analysing magnetic field records at opposite ends of the Earth (UK and Australia), scientists have been able to detect super-storms going back over the last 150 years.

NSF's newest solar telescope produces first images, most detailed images of the sun

Spacedaily.com

Washington DC (SPX) Jan 30, 2020 - Just released first images from the National Science Foundation's Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope reveal unprecedented detail of the sun's surface and preview the world-class products to come from this preeminent 4-meter solar telescope. NSF's Inouye Solar Telescope will enable a new era of solar science and a leap forward in understanding the sun and its impacts on our planet.

Activity on the sun, known as space weather, can affect systems on Earth. Magnetic eruptions on the sun can impact air travel... Читать дальше...

RUAG Space supplied the thermal insulation, the structure of the satellite and the on-board computer, the so-called brain.

The Solar Orbiter is a joint ESA/NASA collaboration and is scheduled for launch for 7th/8th February on a ULA Atlas V launch vehicle. The satellite will get very close to the Sun. It will be the... Читать дальше...

Progress made toward priorities of Heliophysics Decadal Survey

Spacedaily.com

Washington DC (SPX) Feb 04, 2020 - NASA, NSF, and NOAA have made substantial progress in implementing the programs recommended in the 2013 decadal survey on solar and space physics (heliophysics) despite a challenging budgetary landscape, says a new midterm assessment from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Heliophysics is the study of our star, the Sun, its influences on the planets of our solar system, and its interaction with interstellar space. It is also the science behind space weather. Particles are smoking gun for solar wind interactions beyond Earth orbit

Spacedaily.com

San Antonio TX (SPX) Feb 04, 2020 - Using data from NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP), a team led by Southwest Research Institute identified low-energy particles lurking near the Sun that likely originated from solar wind interactions well beyond Earth orbit. PSP is venturing closer to the Sun than any previous probe, carrying hardware SwRI helped develop. Scientists are probing the enigmatic features of the Sun to answer many questions, including how to protect space travelers and technology from the radiation associated with solar events. How ESA-NASA's Solar Orbiter beats the heat

Spacedaily.com

Greenbelt MD (SPX) Feb 05, 2020 - When Solar Orbiter launches on its journey to the Sun, there's one key piece of engineering making this ESA-NASA mission possible: the heat shield.

Seeking a view of the Sun's north and south poles, Solar Orbiter will journey out of the ecliptic plane - the belt of space, roughly in line with the Sun's equator, through which the planets orbit. Slinging repeatedly past Venus in order to draw near the Sun and climb higher above the ecliptic, the spacecraft bounds... Читать дальше...

Sun explorer spacecraft set for launch

Spacedaily.com

London, UK (SPX) Feb 07, 2020 - The UK-built Solar Orbiter spacecraft is set to launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 4am on Monday, 10 February (GMT).

The mission will take the most detailed images ever of the Sun and provide crucial information about how our star's volatile activity affects its atmosphere. This knowledge will help improve predictions of space weather events, which can disrupt and damage satellites and infrastructure on Earth.

Progressing towards assuredly safer autonomous systems

Spacedaily.com

Washington DC (SPX) Feb 03, 2020 - The sophistication of autonomous systems currently being developed across various domains and industries has markedly increased in recent years, due in large part to advances in computing, modeling, sensing, and other technologies. While much of the technology that has enabled this technical revolution has moved forward expeditiously, formal safety assurances for these systems still lag behind.

This is largely due to their reliance on data-driven machine learning (ML) technologies... Читать дальше...
