Reflections from "That Further Shore": A Constitutional Lawyer's Immigrant Family History

History News Network

The book in its initial stages (18 years ago) was to be a story of my parents, both of whom emigrated to America from Ireland in their late teens. The idea of writing such a book, rather than on the Constitution as my earlier book efforts, developed at the end of the decade after their deaths in the late 1980's. I felt the pain of their loss very deeply, and began in 1989  to make trips in the summer period to Ireland to learn more about them as children... Читать дальше...

Honor a Hiroshima Survivor's Legacy: Ban Nuclear Testing and Move to Disarmament

History News Network

Miyoko Matsubara of Japan came to the United States in 1962 on a mission. She wanted to stop nuclear weapons testing. As a child Miyoko had survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.    The United States dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which brought an end to World War II. On the 75th anniversary of the only time nuclear weapons have been used in war, we should listen to Miyoko's story.    Miyoko and her friends had seen a plane flying over Hiroshima that fateful morning. History, Memory and Reconciliation with the (Whole) Past

History News Network

When I was a boy I was an avid stamp collector. Couldn’t wait to find stamps to fill the gaps in my album. I especially loved the commemorative stamps, though I did wonder at the time why the United States of America issued stamps of such people as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and other Confederates. They were traitors; they wanted to destroy the Union. Of course, when I went on to get my degree in history I learned a nuanced view of the complicated efforts to reconcile the... Читать дальше...

How we handle and convey the past has emerged as a central issue in the protests that surround us, opening all sort of complex issues to new debate.

One angle that has not received due attention involves what history tells us about crowd behavior, and how this... Читать дальше...

Hiroshima (1953, Hideo Sekigawa)

History News Network

Hideo Sekigawa's 1953 feature film Hiroshima is difficult to view in its entirety, partly due to the fact that the Communist Sekigawa's political views were out of favor in the context of the postwar relationship between Japan and the United States. This clip was brought to HNN's attention by Erik Loomis at the Lawyers, Guns & Money blog. Loomis writes:

Unconditional Surrender: The Domestic Politics of Victory in the Pacific

History News Network

As we observe the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Japan, we should remember that the terms on which that surrender took place remain among the most contested issues of the war. Unconditional surrender was destined to be controversial because it was Franklin Roosevelt’s policy. A quintessentially New Deal program, its goal was the creation of economically broad-based democracies in societies predicated on conquest and the subjugation of other people.  Conservatives, who had long battled the New Deal...
