A mathematical model analyzing temperature threshold dependence in cold sensitive neurons

Plos.org

by Kees McGahan, James Keener

Here we examine a class of neurons that have been recently explored, the somatosensory neuronal subclass of cold thermosensors. We create a mathematical model of a cold sensing neuron that has been formulated to understand the variety of ionic channels involved. In particular this model showcases the role of TRPM8 and voltage gated potassium channels in setting the temperature dependent activation and inactivation threshold level. Bifurcation analysis of the... Читать дальше...

Urine metabolomic responses to aerobic and resistance training in rats under chronic unpredictable mild stress

Plos.org

by Yumei Han, Yi Jia, Junsheng Tian, Shi Zhou, Anping Chen, Xin Luo

Background

It is known that bioenergetics of aerobic and resistance exercise are not the same but both can effectively improve depression. However, it is not clear whether and how different types of exercise can influence depression through the same metabolic regulatory system. Metabolomics provides a way to study the correlation between metabolites and changes in exercise and/or diseases through the quantitative analysis of all metabolites in the organism. What’s the catch? Profiling the benefits and costs associated with marine protected areas and displaced fishing in the Scotia Sea

Plos.org

by Emily S. Klein, George M. Watters

Both costs and benefits must be considered when implementing marine protected areas (MPAs), particularly those associated with fishing effort displaced by potential closures. The Southern Ocean offers a case study in understanding such tradeoffs, where MPAs are actively being discussed to achieve a range of protection and sustainable use objectives. Here, we evaluated the possible impacts of two MPA scenarios on the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba)... Читать дальше...

Winning by hiding behind others: An analysis of speed skating data

Plos.org

by Genki Ichinose, Daiki Miyagawa, Junji Ito, Naoki Masuda

In some athletic races, such as cycling and types of speed skating races, athletes have to complete a relatively long distance at a high speed in the presence of direct opponents. To win such a race, athletes are motivated to hide behind others to suppress energy consumption before a final moment of the race. This situation seems to produce a social dilemma: players want to hide behind others, whereas if a group of players attempts to do so... Читать дальше...

Image analysis of the intracranial lead bending phenomenon during deep brain stimulation

Plos.org

by Minsoo Kim, Na Young Jung, Jin Woo Chang

Background

An accurate and precise surgical procedure is crucial for patient safety and treatment efficacy of deep brain stimulation (DBS).

Objectives

To investigate the characteristics of intracranial lead bending phenomenon after DBS, and to suggest the methods to avoid bending-related complications.

Methods

A retrospective review of brain computed tomography scans after DBS was performed. Using 3-dimensional reconstruction, the... Читать дальше...

Engineering recurrent neural networks from task-relevant manifolds and dynamics

Plos.org

by Eli Pollock, Mehrdad Jazayeri

Many cognitive processes involve transformations of distributed representations in neural populations, creating a need for population-level models. Recurrent neural network models fulfill this need, but there are many open questions about how their connectivity gives rise to dynamics that solve a task. Here, we present a method for finding the connectivity of networks for which the dynamics are specified to solve a task in an interpretable way. We apply our... Читать дальше...
