Distinct bilateral prefrontal activity patterns associated with the qualitative aspect of working memory characterized by individual sensory modality dominance

Plos.org

by Mayuko Matsumoto, Takeshi Sakurada, Shin-ichiroh Yamamoto

In addition to quantitative individual differences in working memory (WM) capacity, qualitative aspects, such as enhanced sensory modality (modality dominance), can characterize individual WM ability. This study aimed to examine the neurological basis underlying the individual modality dominance component of WM using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). To quantify the degree of individual WM modality dominance, 24 participants... Читать дальше...

Plasma proteome atlas for differentiating tumor stage and post-surgical prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma

Plos.org

by Ting-Tsung Chang, Cheng-Hsun Ho

Although mass spectrometry-based plasma proteomics enables sensitive and large-scale discovery and validation of biomarkers for various diseases, its integrative application to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is not well investigated. Therefore, we analyzed albumin- and immunoglobulin G-depleted plasma samples from 148 and 60 patients with HCC and CCA, respectively, using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The algorithm... Читать дальше...

A longitudinal exploration of the relationship between obesity, and long term health condition with presenteeism in Australian workplaces, 2006-2018

Plos.org

by Syed Afroz Keramat, Khorshed Alam, Jeff Gow, Stuart J. H. Biddle

Background

Obesity and long term health condition (LTHC) are major public health concerns that have an impact on productivity losses at work. Little is known about the longitudinal association between obesity and LTHC with impaired productivity.

Objective

This study aims to explore the longitudinal association between obesity and LTHC with presenteeism or working while sick.

Design

Longitudinal research design

A steady-state model of microbial acclimation to substrate limitation

Plos.org

by John R. Casey, Michael J. Follows

Microbes acclimate to changes in substrate availability by altering the number of transporters on the cell surface, however there is some disagreement on just how. We revisit the physics of substrate uptake and consider the steady-state scenario whereby cells have acclimated to maximize fitness. Flux balance analysis of a stoichiometric model of Escherichia coli was used in conjunction with quantitative proteomics data and molecular modeling of membrane transporters to reconcile these opposing views.
