Major NSF grant accelerates development of the Giant Magellan Telescope

Spacedaily.com

Pasadena CA (SPX) Sep 17, 2020 - The GMTO Corporation has received a $17.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to accelerate the prototyping and testing of some of the most powerful optical and infrared technologies ever engineered.

These crucial advancements for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile will allow astronomers to see farther into space with more detail than any other optical telescope before. The NSF grant positions the... Читать дальше...

Unraveling a spiral stream of dusty embers from a massive binary stellar forge

Spacedaily.com

Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Sep 17, 2020 - With almost two decades of mid-infrared (IR) imaging from the largest observatories around the world including the Subaru Telescope, a team of astronomers was able to capture the spiral motion of newly formed dust streaming from the massive and evolved binary star system Wolf-Rayet (WR) 112. Massive binary star systems, as well as supernova explosions, are regarded as sources of dust in the Universe from its early history, but the process of dust production and... Читать дальше...

How scientists around the world track the Solar Cycle

Spacedaily.com

Greenbelt MD (SPX) Sep 16, 2020 - Every morning, astronomer Steve Padilla takes a short walk from his home to the base of a tower that soars 150 feet above the ground. Tucked in the San Gabriel Mountains, about an hour's drive north from Los Angeles, the Mount Wilson Observatory has long been a home for space science - it's Padilla's home too, one of the perks to his work as Mount Wilson's Sun observer. Mount Wilson has several solar system sentinels; the telescope perched at the top of this tower keeps constant watch on the Sun. Читать дальше...

Spacedaily.com

Washington DC (SPX) Sep 16, 2020 - Solar Cycle 25 has begun. During a media event on Tuesday, experts from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) discussed their analysis and predictions about the new solar cycle - and how the coming upswing in space weather will impact our lives and technology on Earth, as well as astronauts in space.

The Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, an international group of experts co-sponsored by NASA and NOAA, announced that solar minimum occurred in December 2019... Читать дальше...

Citizen scientists help improve space weather forecasts

Spacedaily.com

Washington DC (UPI) Sep 18, 2020 - Data collected by citizen scientists have helped space weather forecasters more accurately predict when Earth will get hit by solar storms, according to a study published Friday in the journal AGU Advances.

When researchers supplement computer models with citizen scientist-collected data on the size and shape of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, forecasts were 20 more accurate.

UK government trying to change torture rules

«Luxembourg Herald»

It is ironic timing that the overseas operations bill returns to parliament next week, not long after questions of international law dominated the political agenda. This government has already, brazenly, admitted that it is prepared to violate international law with the internal market bill. It is now proposing more of the same with an issue that has received less attention. The way in which the egregious overseas operations bill violates international law isn’t complex or arcane. It seeks to... Читать дальше...
