Distinctiveness of genes contributing to growth of Pseudomonas syringae in diverse host plant species

Plos.org

by Tyler C. Helmann, Adam M. Deutschbauer, Steven E. Lindow

A variety of traits are necessary for bacterial colonization of the interior of plant hosts, including well-studied virulence effectors as well as other phenotypes contributing to bacterial growth and survival within the apoplast. High-throughput methods such as transposon sequencing (TnSeq) are powerful tools to identify such genes in bacterial pathogens. However, there is little information as to the distinctiveness of traits required... Читать дальше...

Restriction on self-renewing asymmetric division is coupled to terminal asymmetric division in the Drosophila CNS

Plos.org

by Ivana Gaziova, Michael Gazi, Jordan Mar, Krishna Moorthi Bhat

Neuronal precursor cells undergo self-renewing and non-self-renewing asymmetric divisions to generate a large number of neurons of distinct identities. In Drosophila, primary precursor neuroblasts undergo a varying number of self-renewing asymmetric divisions, with one known exception, the MP2 lineage, which undergoes just one terminal asymmetric division similar to the secondary precursor cells. The mechanism and the genes... Читать дальше...

Snf1 AMPK positively regulates ER-phagy via expression control of Atg39 autophagy receptor in yeast ER stress response

Plos.org

by Tomoaki Mizuno, Kei Muroi, Kenji Irie

Autophagy is a fundamental process responsible for degradation and recycling of intracellular contents. In the budding yeast, non-selective macroautophagy and microautophagy of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are caused by ER stress, the circumstance where aberrant proteins accumulate in the ER. The more recent study showed that protein aggregation in the ER initiates ER-selective macroautophagy, referred to as ER-phagy; however, the mechanisms by which... Читать дальше...

Characterizing chromatin folding coordinate and landscape with deep learning

Plos.org

by Wen Jun Xie, Yifeng Qi, Bin Zhang

Genome organization is critical for setting up the spatial environment of gene transcription, and substantial progress has been made towards its high-resolution characterization. The underlying molecular mechanism for its establishment is much less understood. We applied a deep-learning approach, variational autoencoder (VAE), to analyze the fluctuation and heterogeneity of chromatin structures revealed by single-cell imaging and to identify a reaction coordinate for chromatin folding. Tuning network dynamics from criticality to an asynchronous state

Plos.org

by Jingwen Li, Woodrow L. Shew

According to many experimental observations, neurons in cerebral cortex tend to operate in an asynchronous regime, firing independently of each other. In contrast, many other experimental observations reveal cortical population firing dynamics that are relatively coordinated and occasionally synchronous. These discrepant observations have naturally led to competing hypotheses. A commonly hypothesized explanation of asynchronous firing is that excitatory and... Читать дальше...

Mutation bias interacts with composition bias to influence adaptive evolution

Plos.org

by Alejandro V. Cano, Joshua L. Payne

Mutation is a biased stochastic process, with some types of mutations occurring more frequently than others. Previous work has used synthetic genotype-phenotype landscapes to study how such mutation bias affects adaptive evolution. Here, we consider 746 empirical genotype-phenotype landscapes, each of which describes the binding affinity of target DNA sequences to a transcription factor, to study the influence of mutation bias on adaptive evolution of increased binding affinity. 20020 Open Thread

SB Nation: Toronto Raptors

Here’s a place you can talk about 20020

Earlier today, Secret Base released a new project. It’s called 20020, and it’s the sequel to 17776, which was released a little over three years ago. We hope you like it!

Some of you may want to talk about it, so we figured we’d give you a place to do that. If you haven’t been around on Secret Base before (welcome!), please introduce yourselves in the comments. And if you don’t know what a Secret Base is, we have a video that’ll help out.
