Barton Cup Team Progress
Foursomes is not an easy game and even harder in Matchplay with strong winds blowing.
We have a very strong panel with a great spirit and all pull for one another weather they are picked or not. The management team had a very difficult task picking the 10 players for this match. But that’s the kind of headache you want !
With 3 matches away it was going to be difficult, specifically with the very strong windy conditions
Our 1st pairing away of Stephen Clarke and Ger Turner played against a very strong pairing but secured a 5&3 win . This was exceptional golf by Stephen and Ger who now have 3 away wins in the Barton this year.
Our second pairing was a new one but a vastly experienced one of Colin Fitzpatrick and Sean Quinn . They played against a +1 golfer and a good 15 handicapper, the +1 hit the balls miles, but not a bother to our guys who won on 17 , 3&1.
Unfortunately our third pairing of Colm Connell and Craig Rogan could not replicate their fantastic away win in Malahide and despite playing well were beaten on 14.
At home, again we had 2 strong pairings. First out, Dave Grainger and Willie Halpin. After the initial burst by Blackbush which saw us 2 down after 6 , the lads didn’t panic and brought the game back to A/S.
Again a high quality game , we went 1 up with a birdie on 16 only to lose 17. So on to the 18th. Blackbush played their 2nd shot and found trouble near the rockery on the side of the green , and lucky to stay in bounds. Experience counts in these matches, so Willie on consulting with Dave laid up and then Dave pitched it close to the hole
Game over as the opposition were unable to hit the green with their 3rd shot, this secured the match.
However, our other pairing of Des Carpenter and Martin Wilson were having another match of high quality. Again after been level par after 5 holes found themselves 1 down. But corrected that on the 8th with a fantastic birdie into the wind. From then on they took control of the match. They went 2 up only to lose 15 to a birdie. Standing on 17th 1 up Des hit it to 8 foot and with Blackbush in trouble after their 2nd shot they definitely would have secured the win. Des and Martin were called in so the official result read 3.5 to 1.5. But it real terms it was a 4&1 win.
A great win , and thanks to all the support in Blackbush and HLGC it means a lot to the whole panel.
The next match is against St. Annes G.C. with 3 at home and 2 away and will be played on Friday the 14th June at around 4.30pm .
So well done to the whole panel.
Managers , Captain John and Eoghan
