The moment of death of a member of the Russian national team in windsurfing
The surveillance camera recorded the last seconds of life of the 18-year-old windsurfer Artem Akimov, who came under the "Meteor" in the Gulf of Finland in St. Petersburg.
The incident occurred at about three o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, May 27, in the Petrovsky fairway. A member of the Russian national team, as Fontanka clarifies , traditionally began training on the South Road of Krestovsky Island, where the sailing school is located, reached the Seafront Embankment on Vasilyevsky Island, then turned around.
According to the preliminary version, the athlete did not notice the approaching passenger hydrofoil vessel because of the sail, however, for what reasons the captain did not pay attention to the bright object on the water, remains unknown. He dropped the turn only after the collision.
"Artyom Akimov - an experienced athlete, a member of the Russian national team, recently selected for the world windsurfing championship. He prepared for him yesterday. Artyom knew the waters of the Malaya Nevka and Petrovsky fairway thoroughly," said the director of the sports school Natalya Fedorova.
The remains were found several hours later, the athlete was initially identified by equipment. The circumstances are now being investigated by the North-West Investigation Department for Transport of the TFR. In this case, the MOE stated that the surfer violated the Maritime Code by approaching the route of the ships
