Mum’s horror after hotel room was ‘riddled with bed bugs and stench of urine’

A mum said she was left ‘disgusted’ after spending a night in a hotel reportedly plagued by bed bugs, filthy bed sheets and the lingering stench of urine.

Melissa Conway, 28, travelled to Blackpool with three friends for the BTID Pier on the Pier weekender.

However, two days before they were due to set off, Melissa received an email saying that their hotel was overbooked and they would be staying at a ‘brand new property’.

The women had initially booked to spend Saturday night at Blackpools H Hotel – but they were moved to the Hub Roomz which is a sister property nearby.

Melissa, who works as a nurse , said: ‘I booked this hotel about two or three months ago. We go every year and never have a problem. It’s always cheap and cheerful and we only ever go there to go to sleep so it doesn’t bother us.

‘I got an email two days before we left just saying that we would be staying in a brand new building so we were all excited because it was going to be better than we expected.

‘So they emailed me on the Thursday and we were due to be staying on the Saturday [May 25].’

When the group arrived for their weekend-long party in Blackpool they couldn’t find the new hotel, so went to H Hotel where they were directed to ‘a normal house door’ that had a sign on it saying ‘enquiries’.

Melissa said: ‘We let ourselves in and there were already people on the stairs and we could hear them shouting. I went upstairs and it was a scruffy man with two black teeth left smoking in a trackie.

‘He was from Skelmersdale and was saying ‘ey girl where are you from?’ and I thought it was other people staying at the hotel but he was the man checking us in.

‘He took the £60 off us and £10 for the room key. He basically said your toilet’s broken in your room but I’m a handyman so I’ll look at it while you’re out.’

Eager to make the most of their weekend away, the group threw their bags in the room and went out for the night, getting back at around 11pm.

However, they said it was only when they returned that the true state of the hotel started dawning on them.

Melissa said: ‘There was a different lad waiting for us when we got back and he said we couldn’t use the toilet but we could use it in another room, down the corridor and down the stairs.

‘There were rooms full of rubbish and broken beds. It stank of wee and poo and stale smoke. It was disgusting.

‘When I got under the covers there were Pringles and red hairs where I was going to sleep. The covers hadn’t been washed, they were stained.

‘We couldn’t sleep in the beds because there were springs poking out of them.’

Melissa said doors were ‘kicked in’ around the hotel and some rooms had no carpets, while she feared some guests were actually living in the Hub Roomz.

The women also had to endure people ‘knocking at five in the morning asking where their mates were’ while they were trying to get some sleep.

As they were checking out back at H Hotel at 10am on Sunday, they claim they received a less than satisfactory response to their request for a refund.

A staff member reportedly told the group that they didn’t keep cash on the premises and guests would have to wait until 4pm for other guests to check in if they wanted a refund.

They were later given a form to fill in and contact details to try and claim.
